Now, free set-top boxes with Dish DTH

Read the story here.

Its a complete marketing gimmick. The customer is paying the same amount upfront. The interest accrued on the lumpsum also benefits the company which needs huge capital.

What is more the customer is locked in at higher prices since subscription charges will fall later in the year as DTH companies are forced to provide a la carte rates and TRAI makes channels reduce subscription costs.

Dish may also have to reduce subscription rates due to competition.

          Same news from Business Standard

Dish TV, the direct-to-home (DTH) company, will give its set-top-boxes (STBs) for free in Kolkata.

A consumer will now have to pay only Rs 3,990 for 12 months. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Anindya Sengupta, DVP-sales of eastern India of Dish TV, said, "STBs will be free. A consumer has to pay a years' maxi subscription and installation or activation charges. Consumers will also 67 free movies worth Rs 3990, equivalent to the entire value invested initially".

So, consumers could enjoy Rs 10,480 worth value on an entry price of Rs 3,990, which is 2.6 times the investment.

Dish TV's consumer could now get started at Rs 2490 for three months of maxi package, with 42 movies worth 2490 free or 2990 for six months of maxi package with 50 movies worth Rs 2990 free.

In order to cater to a larger segment of viewers, whose need for entertainment is usually limited to regional and sports channels, the new consumer scheme will also provide an option for the consumer to join in at freedom plus package.

At freedom plus, consumers can enjoy 6, 12, or 18 months of initial subscription for the price points of Rs 2490, Rs 2990 and Rs 3990 respectively along with the same free movie offer.

Dish TV currently has 3.2 million subscribers in India.

How these Heavy Offers(Although this offer may not impact company's revenue) and severe competition from Tata Sky is going to affect Dish's profitability?

DISH TV'S OWN SATELLITE TO BE LAUNCHED BY JUNE

Essel Group owned direct-to-home (DTH) service DishTV is all set to extend its satellite channel capacity to 420 with the launch of its own satellite Argani scheduled by June-end this year. Once operational, the satellite would also enable DishTV to provide broadband internet service to its subscribers.

DishTV, which has offered a free-of-cost set top box (STB) to all new subscribers with new connections, is looking at doubling its customer base of 31 lakh within next 45 days. The same is planned ahead of its Rs 800 crore satellite project being handled by Chinese satellite company ProtoStar.

A number of airlines are also in talks with DishTV to provide TV entertainment during flights. Presently, 20 planes operated by Kingfisher Airlines have DishTV systems installed. Indian Railways is also considering a proposal to install DTH systems in long distance trains, for which, DishTV remains a preferred player, the official added.

DISH TV TIES UP WITH RAJ TRAVELS

In a bid to increase its reach to customers, Dish TV, country's leading direct to home (DTH) service provider has tied up with Mumbai based Raj Travels, a surface passenger transport company.

The tie up will provide Dish TV connection to all the buses of Raj Travels, which will enable the travelers to watch it while traveling.

Dish TV has developed special antenna for such vehicles and it will be attached to the bus on its top. Unlike the existing curve, the newly developed antenna is flat, hence it does not spoil the shape of the vehicle. The same could be attached to passenger vehicles too, he said.

Having 420 channels should help Dish TV to transmit all the current available channels plus some more which are in the pipeline.

That should get them good carriage fees as new channels would be happy to give to get immediate audience of around 30L subscribers.

So customer is happy (because he is getting so many channels), so is Dish TV.
