Remember that big conversation you had with yourself, in which you vowed to lose weight or find a new career or start exercising?

Do things always seem to get in the way of accomplishing even the simplest of goals like calling potential clients? If you find yourself in the intellectual zone and not the productive zone, I have some ideas for you to think about if you're willing to break out of your personal "comfort zone".

What is it that separates productive people from those who for whatever reason are unable to be all that they would like to be?

It is an irony to be sure, but our comfort zones can actually bring about a great deal of discomfort when they keep us from accomplishing things that are important to us. Productivity is fueled by self-talk. Self-talk is nothing more than thoughts, but thoughts have the power to motivate or cripple us.

What we believe to be true about our environment and ourselves is derived from our core beliefs, which is the most accurate predictor of all for happiness, contentment and success. Comfort zones usually feel familiar and predictable and that is what makes them comfortable, not the experiences or outcomes associated with them.

That is why it is possible to get stuck in a comfort zone even when it is extremely uncomfortable or painful being there. It has been said in many different ways that the brain can only truly focus on one thing at a time.

If your focus is say, losing weight, but one of your core beliefs is that you are unattractive, your brain will go into overdrive processing all the competing messages and negative self-talk, which will cause you to become distracted from your focus and robbed of the energy you need to be successful.

Allowing negative thoughts and emotions to rule our interior keeps us from being productive and happy. If you are wondering how to breakthrough situations like this, it is often helpful to just take a moment and really listen to what you are saying to yourself.
Really hear it. Taking a non-judgmental position, ask yourself if the negative message is really true or a faulty core belief that has no basis in reality.

Next, ask yourself whether the old thought patterns of discouragement originated from someone in your past. If so, then put it in the proper perspective and decide on a replacement message that more accurately describes who you are.

Encourage yourself to reinforce the new message over and over again when you stumble. Negative messages can paralyse us with indecision. But being able to make decisions is a huge part of being productive. There comes a point when it is time to stop collecting information and get into action.

Let's face it; we are all human and there are no perfect human beings. And the simple truth is that no matter what you do, someone is not going to like it! But making decisions that are sound and right for you are essential components to living a meaningful life.

If you find that you are dealing with a faulty core belief, you will recognise it for the old baggage it is by comparing the degree of your reaction to the severity of the incident. If your reaction is out of proportion to the situation, you can pretty much bank on it being old baggage.

So get rid of the baggage if you are interested in changing your life. Those who have worked through their baggage are usually pro-active.

So, if it is a new career you are interested in, take action! Get your resume updated, check out the newspaper classified ads, or start networking with friends and colleagues. By listening to the signals your intuition sends you and taking an action on its behalf, you will automatically feel stronger and more confident.

That is what comes of being true to your self. It's not listening to your truth that is depressing and destructive. Also, take stock of the community of people you choose to be around. Do you spend your time with people who hate their jobs, who only work for the paycheck and sit around waiting for a better life to happen to them? Get out of there!
 
Don't allow yourself to be contaminated by that kind of energy. I have a group of peers who are all very interested in continuous improvement that I meet with once a week.

Spending time together is a good way to reinforce our values. Guess what? These people tend to hang out with other like-minded people as well, because they know that the people you hang around with affects your overall productivity*.

Finally, you may need to eliminate something in your current schedule to free up the time and effort you will need to do this work and accomplish your goals. Be honest with your self; make a list of the things you can do by yourself, acknowledge your limitations and then respect the boundaries between.

Kulmanji, this is the basis on which self-hypnosis healers work (Dr. Palan is  one of them and I have attended one of his workshops) , and following these methods are able to work wonders for a range of purposes inlcuding motivation , pschyco-somatic problems , stress relaxation and mindset changes... was really a great experience....

CatCall, that's nice to know about Dr Palan's workshop on self-hypnosis. Could you tell us more on your experience, his workshop etc if it isn't inconvenient.

Dr. Palan, who is incidentally the head of the the Self Hypnosis International association , has conducted numerous workshops in India and Abroad. He also runs his own clinic and consultancy
   His workshops on self-hypnosis work on a wide range of subjects ....it would be difficult to cover a lot, I 'll here touch on one such issue.
 
          He says we all know that stress is bad for our body, so is anger, hate etc. How come we cannot stop it, after all , it is simply a matter of changing oneself? The reason is that our mind consists of two parts the outer mind (concious mind), which reacts to situations and the inner mind,(or subconcious mind) where our beliefs lie. When a child is born, he has a very weak inner mind  and a sufficently strong outer mind. As he grows, various beliefs are programmed into him through his surroundings into his innermind (e.g with regards to fear, love, patience etc.) This beliefs, once programmed are impossible to remove in the normal fashion.So ,inspite of negative feelings inside u, it is impossible for a person to remove them.
           
        Hence , the subconcious mind has to be re- programmed , and this requires self hypnosis. These kind of self hypnotic techniques have been used effectively to cure various psycho-somatic disorders too like bed-wetting in children, exam fevers, phobias etc. as also repressive habits like chain-smoking etc. and can actually bring a sea-change in the very personality of an individual. 
 
     I have , over my career, attended numerous seminars, workshops, related to topics related to management,engineering, finance,personality development etc. but I can confidentally say that this would rate among one of the best.

Please note that these details may not be  uptodate, however, I will try and get an update for you. As regards charges, he does both two-three days wokshops for corporates  as also individual sessions. Here is how he defines Hypnotism:

Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's. Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

There was once a small boy who banged a drum all day and loved every moment of it. He would not be quiet, no matter what anyone else said or did. Various people who called themselves Sufis, and other well-wishers, were called in by neighbors and asked to do something about the child.
The first so-called Sufi told the boy that he would, if he continued to make so much noise, perforate his eardrums; this reasoning was too advanced for the child, who was neither a scientist nor a scholar. The second told him that drum beating was a sacred activity and should be carried out only on special occasions. The third offered the neighbors plugs for their ears; the fourth gave the boy a book; the fifth gave the neighbors books that described a method of controlling anger through biofeedback; the sixth gave the boy meditation exercises to make him placid and explained that all reality was imagination. Like all placebos, each of these remedies worked for a short while, but none worked for very long.
Eventually, a real Sufi came along. He looked at the situation, handed the boy a hammer and chisel, and said, "I wonder what is INSIDE the drum?"

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the story about mayonnaise jar and the coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.    When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.    So, the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.    The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."    The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.    "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - your God, family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions - things, that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.    "The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else - the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.    "If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Maybe even play another 18 holes. There's always time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."    One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.    The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Ok TEDdies, I am gonna upload a very famous "self-assesment" test to a webpage in the next few minutes.
 
The test is just for around 2-3 minutes(Powerpoint format). You shall amazed what you shall know about yourself from this short-test.
 
Just be 300% honest when answering and dont look at the answers before finishing all the questions yourself.
 
After doing so, let me know on this thread, what you found out about yourself and how was the test. This test is one of the most revealing self-assesment tests ever.

I have a theory which I always follow in life:
 
1) Positive attitude brings positive people into your life and negative attitude brings negative people all around you. This again resonates with an age-old phrase of "Birds of a feather flock together". That is why I believe if I want to be successful, I have to be in the company of people who are as successful as me or more(I prefer the latter). That is why visionaries always surround themselves with people smarter than them. There are countless examples all around. Bill Gates, JRD Tata, Ambani. They all are good at something and for the things they are not so good at, they hire the best people in those fields. I am sure Kulman ji would like to get in Buffett here.
 
But what most of us not realise is that we all can be as good as the above mentioned people. The secret being simple: surround yourself with people who are better than you, at what you are trying to be good at. It is a somewhat confusing line, but re-read it everyone 5-6 times, to let the words sink in. The ones who regularly interact on TED and who not only share their thoughts but also read each and every new post are really the people that are emulating the above theory.
Now, if you see nagtivity breeds neagtive people all around you. If you have negative thoughts(whether you are right or wrong is irrelevant), then you shall see that out of the blue and beyond your control, even more negative things start happening with you and even more negative people fuel this fire further.
 
The only way to get out of this negativity is to simply force yourself to smile and be humble(break the ego). The other solution(which I apply mostly) is to stay silent. Whenever someone does something that really hurts you or makes you angry, simply stay silent or "say something back but without any vengeance...like a cold-blooded killer would do...no emotions nothing". Say something back as if was someone else's problem you were solving. If you become the 3rd person, you shall see that you do answer back to your opponent in the exact same words that you would usually have(in your negative mood) but you wouldn't feel vulnerable or negative inside.
 
2) Money attracts Money. When someone has money, he earns more money. When someone gets frustrated over money, he repels money. The key to attracting money is to feel as if you own that money already and not as if you are trying desperately to ask for that money.
 
When someone feels as if he already owns 10 crore rupees and then he devises a plan on how he would earn that money, the universe helps the process hastily. But when someone desperately seeks 10 crore rupees, every plan seems to shoot right back.
 
 
I can't put all my thoughts here but just felt like writing something, so did so. Finally, to end it all, be positive...If you have trouble staying positive, simply smile. It has a strange way of somehow breaking your ego and actually turning the negativity inside, into positive energy. Try it out sometime.
 
All the above are facts of life, and not poems from a poet or philosophy(as we know it), so apply it.

Sir, I am just a mirror. I reflect what is already there inside all the TEDs. I am just lucky enough to have been chosen on this one occasion as the messenger. As I said sometime back in another thread, everyone of us plays the role of a messenger in some form or the other...sometime or the other.  However, the messenger has to understand his "aaukaad" and not try to be the king who sent him to deliver the message.
 
 
So, thanks to HIM and NOT ME, and thanks again for those kind words. Actually, I would have prefered showing the money part too as money is Maa Laxmi and Maa can never be anything that is against spirituality.
 
In vedas, as far as my limited knowledge goes, wealth(not just material wealth) is part and parcel of being spiritual. We dont need to let go of it to become spiritual. However, for higher levels of sadhanas, material wealth may have to be ignored! But we all are not targeting to become sadhaks are we?? Wink  LOL
