Subject: The Future Of Telecom Sector
Date Posted: 22/Nov/2009 at 9:53pm
In recent days the price war among different telecom operators, Nation wide launch of operations by newcomers like Tata Docomo and GSM operations of Reliance Communications and the slide of telecom stocks in the market have raised quite a few questions on future of telecom sector.
Till recently we were basically more or less talking of two or three particular companies. But now suddenly we find pessimism all over, about telecom sector. But still there are others who see Broadband, 3G , VAS ( Value Added Services), as potential earners for telecom sector.
By 31st Dec 2009 , Metros and by 20th March 2010 we will be having Mobile Number Portability (MNP) . As per initial TRAI report subscribers will be able to change the service provider for apltry sum of Rs 19/- only. This is going to make this sector even more exciting to be discussed upon.
Hence I thought to initiate this thread where we discuss telecom as sector and not as stock synopsis of a particular company, though you are welcome to and can discuss each and every company in respect to telecom on this thread
Hope you all post your valuable posts.
With Warm Regards!

TRAI published a paper in December 2008 entitled:
Measures to Improve Telecom Penetration in Rural India
– The next 100 million subscribers
In this paper, they gave following telephone density figures :

And concluded that ;
There are about 315.31 million wireless subscribers as on September 2008 of which, about 90.76 million subscribers are from rural India. To achieve the target of 500 million by 2010, it is imperative that 90-100 million new subscribers are from rural areas.

The onus of this study paper in December 2008 was that around 72.5% of Urban population is already covered but rural penetration has tremendeous scope as it has been covered just 12.72%

In response to looking for next 100 million subscribers in rural india they invited comments from various parties But I list here few of our interest
1. Bharti Telecom (Airtel)

5. Qualcomm
http://www.trai.gov.in/WriteReadData/trai/upload/StudyPapers/13/Qualcomm.pdf - http://www.trai.gov.in/WriteReadData/trai/upload/StudyPapers/13/Qualcomm.pdf
These responses were published on Jan 15 2009
Reading them gives one quite an insight into future of telecom.
If we are already having urban teledensity of around 72% in September 2008 and which should definitely be more as on date. Then In urban areas all we can expect is price wars and subscriber hip-hop from one platform to another.
But alongside as most companies and TRAI, realizes is a vast rural market lying to be tapped.
So What is the Future of Telecom Sector?

For those who do not like going to links, I list key points
Tata Teleservices - We strongly feel that the Goverment's target of achieving 500 million subscribers by 2010 can be achieved only if we are able to tap the rural/uncovered population by providing the affordable telecom services.
Bharti Airtel -The Indian telecom operators are already burdened with high taxation & levies to the extent of 30%. TRAI also recognize the importance of lower levies for the growth of telecom services in rural area and thus, TRAI made its observations in the above recommendations by stating that “…….Despite very heavy taxation vis-à-vis other neighboring countries, ….. our tariffs are the least in the world, a tribute to the competition in the sector and our operators. Reducing levies is essential to drop cost to customer and hence increase in penetration in new markets particularly rural areas ……………."
Nokia Siemens Network -The way we foresee growth in this part of the market, voice and data need to be taken together and technologically we can differentiate as a low cost voice and an affordable BB penetration.
Reliance Communications-The government have recently waived off the license fee on rural wire line phones. We suggest that any policy framework giving relief to fixed wire line phones should also include the wireless phones and the wireless PCOs so that the required goals for increasing the accessibility could be achieved. Since the government has already waived off the license fee on rural wire line connections, we suggest that the waiver of license fee should be extended to fixed wireless phones and PCOs installed in the rural areas as well. This will provide a boost to the operators for their rural operations.

I am confused on 3G spectrum to be launched soon in the country. Cause as per my basic knowledge 3G standard as per International Telecommunication Union are already incorporated in most CDMA phones.
In my quest for answers, (and surprisngly), found this on wikipedia.
SOURCE WIKIPEDIA
The first pre-commercial 3G network was launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan branded FOMA, in May 2001 on a pre-release of W-CDMA technology. The first commercial launch of 3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on October 1, 2001, although it was initially somewhat limited in scope, broader availability was delayed by apparent concerns over reliability. In 1999 Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo introduced its mobile internet service, i-Mode, which today is the world's largest mobile internet service and roughly the same size as Google in annual revenues. |
Intresting, for me cause I always thought Tata Indicom & Reliance Communications are already using word '3G' for their technology CDMA. Becomes even more intresting since NTT DoCoMo is now Tata DoCoMo.
And here we see all the hype in GSM technology. To quote same source again.
SOURCE WIKIPEDIA
GSM (the current most popular cellular phone standard) could deliver not only voice, but also circuit-switched data at download rates up to 14.4 kbps. But to support mobile multimedia applications, 3G had to deliver packet-switched data with better spectral efficiency, at far greater bandwidths. |
This means to me is that the auction coming for 3G spectrum is for greater bandwiths required by GSM operators. And as I have already written in one of my post in Airtel vs Rcom thread that TRAI was biased towards GSM technology and Rcom and Tata Indicom had to switch to GSM from initial CDMA technology in order to compete with GSM players.
Only Time Will Tell what technolgies are there in store for us and how this Telecom Co's Price war goes on.................... But am confused as what Tata DoCoMo is upto???????

Hitesh Ji,
Its more then meets the eye, its not market, but regulator (TRAI) favouring a less efficient technology (GSM) over a more efficient one (CDMA).

Govt not to set up ombudsman for telecom sector http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/businessline/blnus/15261401.htm - http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/businessline/blnus/15261401.htm In Case You Do Not Like Going To Links:
The Government on Thursday ruled out setting up an ombudsman to redress the complaints of poor mobile telephony services like call drops saying state-run BSNL/MTNL were taking effective steps to upgrade technology. Minister of State for Telecom, Mr Sachin Pilot, said while the telecom revolution has led to India having one of the world’s cheapest call rates, it has also led to congestion in networ k leading to call drops. The Telecom Minister, Mr A. Raja, said the per second metering of call, recently introduced by major mobile telephony operators, is to ensure that consumers are not made to pay for full one-minute when the call may not have lasted more than a few seconds because of call drop.
He said he was “not bothered” about companies’ losing revenue in the per-second billing as long as consumers are benefited. |
Wonder what they are "bothered" about........?

The Indian mobile price war is getting ridiculous
http://www.gomonews.com/the-indian-mobile-price-war-is-getting-ridiculous/ - http://www.gomonews.com/the-indian-mobile-price-war-is-getting-ridiculous/ In Case You Do Not Like Going To Links:
Indian mobile operator Reliance Communications (RCom) has announced a new price for sending SMS. It is 1 paise. Which is 0.0002 dollars. To put it another way, it now costs 2 cents to send 100 SMS through Reliance. How do you reckon that’s going to pan out in the long run?
It’s not quite as simple as 1 paisa per SMS. There are two new SMS plans that RCom is offering its subscribers. The first plan costs 11 rupees a month (about 24 cents) and that gives you access to the 1 paisa SMS. The second plan costs 1 rupee per day (about 2 cents), which gives you unlimited daily texts - although RCom fair usage policy asks consumers not send more than 15,000 SMS in a month. Compared to the market average of 50 paisa per SMS, that’s a lot cheaper.

Indeed.....i think a new entrant will pretty soon start paying subscribers for talktime.
Wouldn't that be really nice......
The money that i'll loose once i buy Airtel will get compensated by blabbering on the phone all the time.

Tata Docomo has already indicated their willingness to pay money to new subscribers for signing on to their service.
A friend who works in a senior position at Vodafone told me that things are going to get really ugly when number portability gets implemented, because the cost of each customer switch for a telco will be about Rs.200 per subscriber, while TRAI has mandated that they can not charge more than Rs.19 per switch.

Its almost becoming a menace now......
While the environment of price decline has been a trend since mobile telephony was launched, but now its reaching the levels of hysteria. I simply see no brand strength here.....its as if people are only interested in cost nothing else. There's no diffrentiator other than price.
What all this means is there is no revinue visibility left in this sector. Its a slugfest, where companies are falling over one another to get hurt.

Thats partly because none of them were really interested in providing quality 'after sales' service to customers. Once you had the connection the grievances did not matter, as you were stuck with em because of the number!! The first one to provide quality will definitely build up a brand loyalty too!

You are right....its only just they are getting hammered. No tears to be shed for them.
Well, I am a proud Vodafone customer for almost 10 years now....infact, I am still caryying the "YES" sim card. And I can safely say I have never felt cheated....but with my dad's Airtel connection, I have had issues. They used to subscribe him to stupid services without taking his consent. And you dont know how much pleasure I am deriving when I am seeing this company's getting battered all around the park. Once number portability comes in effect, I would be rushing to get my dad's operator changed.
Till now, people have been giving examples of how Bharti has been an outperformer.....10 years hence, people will give examples of how this stock has let them down.....thank you, Rcom and DoCoMo!!!!!

Nearly two crore mobile phones without unique identification numbers will go out of service from midnight today, with government deadline to operators to block calls to such devices on security concerns expiring tonight.
According to an analyst, the overall loss to the industry will be Rs 100 crore.
Despite requests from the GSM mobile operators lobby Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the operators themselves, the government is sticking to its deadline.

Based on my understanding of the sector, i would love to pick shares of Airtel, but at cheaper price which reflects the future ROCE of the sector.
I can't really understand the business case of all these new companies - except for the original allotees who made money on rich valuations. Each of these plan to have 10-20% market share !!

The telecom sector would go like the media, retail, airline and so many other sectors in India which are only governed by capital investments...who can throw more money...none of the companies have any sustainable competitive advantage (no brand loyalty, exclusive mkts, taste/association, path dependence, barriers to entry, scale). Bharti has to some extent and should be the last man standing (good brand loyalty, large customer base with switching costs, lowest cost, outsourced services, nationawide sales and service force), so its a great buy at lower levels.

The leading GSM Operator is feeling heat.
"The Telecom Reuglatory Authority of India (TRAI) should look at predatory pricing," Bharti Airtel CEO Manoj Kohli said in New Delhi. Asked whether tariffs be regulated, Kohli said, "tariffs have to be sustainable in the long-run. TRAI should definitely look at predatory pricing, that is tariff lower than the cost structure of operators". |

I've made a lot of money on Bharti and it was my first multibagger..so in a way i might be biased, but i think they have the best operating model, and would be around when consolidation happens in the indian markets. They are looking at increasing their cashflow by the buyouts and grow their market share globally and hence would have cash available to buy out indian players as and when they falter. So this is definately the best bet in the indian telecom space.

Yeah it could be, but the thing is Zain already had rejected an offer in the same range. Its more about access to newer territories, and once consolidation happens, the strongest players have a franchise for a long time. But you never know and it could well turn out be an error in judgement at that price.

I think it is a pretty good move by Bharti. The reason why so many players are coming to India is driving Bharti to go to Africa: GROWTH. Growth is shifting from Developed to Developing to Under-developed world.

yeah...and they are waiting for things to crash in the indian market before buying out competitors...mittal has already said consolidation will happen in 2 years and they are ready for it. I think by then they would have also consolidated their position in african markets and can use those cashflows to buyout companies here. So its i think the best bet to buy even now for the future.

I think the indian telecomm industry has reached the inevitable phase of consolidation now as there are too many companies poppin up with hardly any compettetive advantage over each other..
I think big fish like RCOM,vodafone or TATA would gulp small fishes like Uninor ,Aircell and other reginal players..
I invite all to share there wisdom on the future on telecom companies in india and how they vision the industry after 5-6 yrs..Will it be just 2-3 big players?

Nobody mentioned on this thread, the way to play telecom was by 100,000 crore handset market in India in 2010. I had a token 50 share position in Spice Mobile and observed it rocket feeling greater dolt each day. Can still double/triple in a year from here but I am in denial and have accepted that I've missed this train...Enjoy the journey those who like it.

Govt will gain with reissue of license but consumers will have to pay the price as Telecom companies will pass over the burden...time to get out of telecom companies as almost all families in villages has a mobile..might be they will opt for 2 more mobiles one for each in the family so the upside is restriced to a mximum of 4 times growth...only thing that might be intresting could be the broadband play hereon for these companies...
