Now that the markets are loosing as if there is no tommorow.I would like to take my mind of it and my bleeding ,torn and tatered portfolio.
I was wondering how many of us at TED play Golf.
Golf is the most wonderful game.It is more a passion than a game.It teaches on the course and seeks the best from each person. It is an individual game with no age barrier.A perfect antidote to stress. You need to forget everything other than to simply connect the club with the ball. With no one to blame there is a scope for self improvement each day.
Golf is a big draw all over the world there are equal no. of public courses as there are private ones in US. Thailand boosts of some great courses that draw the Japanese by the drove. It may be noted that the popularity of Golf goes up with the prosperity of the country case in point South Korea.
Golf many feel is for the elderly but is fantastic for all ages it gives us a chance to go out in the sun or in any weather and enjoy the outdoors.
I would love to hear the comments of everybody on TED with regard to Golf.

I have started playing golf since end of last year and yes its a great game as you have rightly stated you challenge nobody but yourself in this game .....initially I used to find it very frustrating when I had a very bad swing and inspite of knocking more than 2-3 buckets of ba*ls I still used to hardly get anything(not that I am very good now :-)) but still I was told not to give up ...I try to play whenever I can atleast keep in tocuh with the swing .....and friends believe me hitting a stationery ball isnt as easy as it seems ....alok bhai pls dont ask what my handicap is :-)

Basantji, Do start off as this is one game that any body can continue for a long time some people paly it till the age of 80.
Jagtapji handicap is dependent on the day the sunnier it is the better the handicap.
Yes Golf requires a lot of perseverance to start with but then you get hooked on to it( only the hook is to be controled ).
It is Yoga if I may truly express my feelings for the game. The game humbels every body jast as stocks do.A clear focus as in stocks is of paramount importance. When I read about decipline it always takes my mind to the game.
I would suggest everybody who can to take up this game It is imply great.

Unfortunately, golf is a bit elitist here. I've played in phoren where it's quite cheap and you don't need to be a member. The municipal councils ran the courses.
I console myself with computer golf nowadays!

Yes, I do agree that Golf has an elitist tag attached to it.But so is any sport that requires a club membership.I have noticed in most clubs the non players outnumber the players by a vast margin and the club is reduced to a cheap drinking place for a priveleged few.The membership too is guarded as if it was the holy grail and few geniune sport lovers get through this old boys clubs.
But just think about going to a vast expanse of green in the day away from the hustle and bustle of the city to be able to play without noise all around. It is a really good game that requires a lot of patience and honesty .

The Winter is about to end and Golfing in the hot Summer months and then the monsoons will be trying. But I do hope some of us TED will take up the game.Believe me it is an adictive sport and one that is catching up very fast.
Bali and Veitnam have build great courses to take advantage of the Japanese passion for the game.It is helping the local economy do well.We Indians too are not to be left behind the more prosperous states are building great Golfing destinations.A case in point is the number of courses in and around the NCR.But the singular lack of Municipal courses is causing us to be behind the curve to find good Golfers.Maybe Some driving ranges are what we require.

Sunday can be gruling with the 18 hole game taking about 6 houra with a half hour break for Bfast and the number of waits for the greens to clear up.
There is more phisycs in the design of a golf ball an the flight of the golf ball would require a superfast computer to take into account the factors causing it.The clubs to are designed and do require rocket science to get the best design and material.
I am focusing on the Golf because the markets have littele to focus on (pun intended). And also Golf they say is the largest religion of the world and the money in Golf and merchandising Golf makes IPL look like a Gully cricket mathch.

Tee off --- To start play the players using their tees to lift the ball slightly heigher from the ground hit for the first time there may be one or many tee off points to increase / decrese the distance to the putting green.
Fairway -- Ahead of the tee of point on way to the putting green from where a shot can be taken without hinderence.
Rough --- mostly thick growth where a practise swing is allowed but the ball must not move before the stroke is taken.
Hazard -- An area where neither the surrounding nor the ball can be disturbed.
Putting Greens --- a place where the hole to put the ball is located and on which use of a putter alone is allowed.

A couple of thoughts on golf by PG
Golf, like measles, should be caught young.
Golf... is the infallible test. The man who can go
into a patch of rough alone, with the knowledge that only God is
watching him, and play his ball where it lies, is the man who will
serve you faithfully and well.
Sudden success in golf is like the sudden acquisition of wealth. It is apt to unsettle and deteriorate the character.
The least thing upset him on the links. He missed short putts because of the uproar of the butterflies in the adjoining meadows.
To find a man's true character, play golf with him.

Just purchased a new Taylor made burner plus set .Excellent result imence improvement in the money I win most mornings
The course is getting more difficult in the monsoons with the ball some times proving elusive on the fairway as it tends to get partialy burried on landing. The captain of the course is having a tough time removing the grass.
Also note the age of the runners up to the British open 60 so this a game that poses a chellenge for an under 25 person and also some one relatively old too.

Tiger Woods is so rich that he owns lots of expensive cars. Now he has a
hole in one.
What's the difference between a car and a golf ball? Tiger can drive a ball
400 yards.
Tiger Woods wasn't seriously injured in the crash, but he's still below
par.
What were Tiger Woods and his wife doing out at 2.30 in the morning? They went
clubbing
Tiger Woods crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree. He couldn’t decide
between a wood and an iron.

In 1923, Who Was ............ ..
1. President of the largest steel company? 2. President of the largest gas company? 3. President of the New York stock Exchange? 4. Greatest wheat speculator? 5. President of the Bank of International Settlement? 6. Great Bear of Wall Street?
These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of their days..
Now, 80 years later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them..
The Answers:
1. The president of the largest steel company. Charles Schwab, died a pauper.
2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane.
3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.
4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless.
5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself.
6 The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livermore,
also committed suicide
However, in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important golf tournament, the US Open, was
Gene Sarazen.
What became of him?
He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure at the time of his death.
The Moral:
F#@k work. Play golf.

Hi Basantji
can we start a new thread on 10 ways to pass time when there is no value stocks to be found.
this is very important because often there are no bargains and doing nothing in the market is best thing
What are the Top 10 things you would do to pass time when there are no bargains in the market?
1-Play Golf
2-Go on Holiday
3-Spend time with Family
4-Focus full time on Job
etc etc

Never knew that we had thread on golf..
I played golf for the first time ever this year. Actually given it a try after bored with long pause of doing nothing in snowfall winter. I tried to learn it few times on driving range initially and played few games so far. Fortunately many people in golf club were and are eager to teach lessons patiently all the time.. I must say it's great experience and it's game of patience and perfection. I also realised that somebody can be pissed off by this game. For eg. when I played my first internal game and beat an guy [with 3 years exp.], he was literally screwed off by his own thoughts. After that too, I frequently observed that people take it so seriously that they feel really bad about themselves if they have just one bad game.
Still learning the game. Also made par score in an hole luckily.. Somebody rightly said "Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated"

It is the only game where you get to hit a stationary ball and yet screw it.Whats the course you are going to and have you been handicaped ?

We do have decent golf course at my place.. Yes, I am still learning and playing in handicap league. It's handicap league to welcome everybody though there are many experts [with raw score in 40s] playing in same league.. Since how long are you playing this game?
This seems to be the only game anyone can play for long time..till old days..

Yes one can play the game for a long time this was one of the reasons that I took up the game I have been playing since about 6 years now.
It is wonderfull game that must be taken up by tedies because the dicipline that it teaches is huge and during the course of the game one comes to know about his character as well as that of the opponent.
The club is a great place to socialise and get to know different people and their thoughts on a variety of topics. It is on the course that i came to know that Mahindra sold the 2nd largest no. of scorpios in Patna. That airtel is growing hugely in Bihar and that Dainik bhaskar may be launching soon in Bihar !!!!

The Game is addictive. I feel it is not a game if you want to lose weight or something but great if you love the outdoors.
You feel the weather in monsoons you will get drencehed in winter the icy wind will hurt the ear and in summer it can get horrible but as I say the earlier one picks the game the better and it does a world of good for the mood.

It is not much of a spectator sport on TV but believe me you should see the locals where the matches are held. The Just concluded British Open at the St Andrews link was in its 150 year and Golf has been played there by a royal decree since 1640 or so.
The more affluent the nation gets the more golf courses it has .Go to Thailand or even Cambodia they have fantastic courses mostly to attract the Japanese Golfers. In India it has an elitist status as there is a paucity of Public corses.
It would be difficult to belive that at the St Andrews there is no Golf on sunday as families picnic there but they regard the greens as sacrosant and would never damage it. Unlike here the courses have to be gated to keep out public who might want to sunbathe sitting on the Greens.

That's very true. I was never fascinated by the name while watching it but I should say I love it after I gave it a try.
Last week we played one club game where you have to choose "one" club for whole game and will have to complete 9-hole game with just one club and putter. It was different and interesting. Tomorrow we do have scramble and I like it as team will always get best score.

Great to see a golf thread. Well done Alok, to keep the thread alive.
Started playing golf nearly 35 years ago. Since then, I've been a regular at the two Calcutta golf courses. For the past few years, with advancing age, I've stopped playing during summer and monsoon.
It is a bit of a challenge when I start the season in October, getting the ball off the ground and keeping the ball on the fairway. By December/January things start falling into place, and I start shooting around my handicap.

Subahankar Sie, really glad to know you have kept the passion alive. We invite Kolkata Golfers to the annual tounament at Patna. it is usualy in FEB 2nd week all on the house .I will give you an invite then. The course here is very chalenging with most T off places located behind the trees so a lofted Drive is reqired .We dont have any water hazards but the course is relly well maintained.
Today was ahorrible sunday with my patner worse tahan me on top of it it was a double or quits at the end and both our toofs were bad while the young opponent (just finished his 12th) smaked the ball 280 yards for a birde on a par 4 so I guess I ll nurse my drink today evening.

I've never played golf in Patna, and would love to have the opportunity. Feb is a busy month for tournaments, so if you can let me know the dates in advance, it will be a great help. How long is your course? Full 18 holes? How many par 3s, par 4s and par 5s?
The game is a great leveller. If you think you have mastered the game, it pulls you down a few notches and lets you know how difficult a game it is!

Patna is a 7100 yds course 3 par 5, 4 par 3s and the rest par 4rs . Longest par 5 580 yds.
A truly great course build in 1921 as a polo club and gradualy turned into a golf course.Nurtured by members as their baby and loved by all who get a chance to play here.

That is a LONG course! Is it well bunkered? No water hazards means fewer lost balls!
The RCGC at Calcutta is a long course, but not as long as Patna. The real difficulty is the water hazards - liberally appearing in all the holes except the last.

The fairways are tight and fringed by rough with a lot of trees and undergrowth which is difficult to manage in the monsoons .So monsoons are a caddies delight lost balls and each worth RS 20 or more as per the quality of the ball.
Incedently Ranchi too has a great course . One of the oldest courses in Bihar not much younger than RCGC is the 9 hole course at Jamalpur run by the railways. Danapur next to Patna has a marvelous course run by the Army .
In Bengal Kalingpong has a unique course as an Ex officer I get to play there a chalange in the hills.
Would love to know if any course is planned at Rajarhat/ Salt lake as the new townships are comming up very well.

I've stayed at the Govt. guest house across the road from the Kalimpong course and seen people play there - but didn't get a chance to play. But I was blown away to see a golf course on the road between Gaya and Bodh Gaya (also maintained by the Army).
The course at Ghatshila (near Jamshedpur) is picturesque and challenging - 11 greens but 18 tees. Some of the greens have two holes in them.

When these clubs were build Bihar was the best administered state in India. Also if you see the data and forcast Bihar has a growth rate just below Gujrat. So perception is not reality. Changes are comming fast and any one with a old mind set will lose out on the opportunity here.
Today one must talk of Gangtok and Sikkim rather tahn Goa . If I had to place a bet on a state that would do very well 5 years hence it would be Sikkim.
They are planning to have Casinos and other money generating tourist attractions so paln something in Sikkim if not Siliguri.
