Hi guys! Nice to be back on TED!

Let me start off with a software tip. Ever wondered how to lock a single folder on your PC with a password without using a complicated software?

Here you go. .......................

Open Notepad and copy the below code program (in green font) and save as locker.bat. Don't forget to change your password in the code it's shown the place where to type your password.

Now double click on locker .bat
First time start it will create folder with Locker automatically for u. After creation of the Locker folder, place the contents u want to lock inside the Locker Folder and run locker.bat again.

I hope this comes in handy

Ya, was a great experience as usual, though language and food continue to be a problem (it's worse than France or Itay as far as the no. of engilish speaking people go.. most people don't understand engilsh and most signboards(at least outside Tokyo) are in Japanese.
Otherwise, the country and it's systems are a technological Marvel...every time you go you feel it can't get any better than this, and every time you are proved wrong .....
The Kansai International Airport at Osaka is one such example, with the runway extending into the sea !!

Ya, note that traditional Japanese do not eat meat and chicken, they are basically sea food eaters (Uncooked Octopus dipped in soya sauce is considered a delicasy!)

One old timer there there companed that many younger gen. Japanese have picked up on meat and chicken "thanks to the infuence of American Culture")Smile

I had forwarded this one to another discussion group. And these were the replies....

Response1: This is indeed a good way of keeping the data safe from a novice, probably not from an expert.

After locking the locker.bat file anyone can press the edit button after
right click which would show the password & the program
. Now i am not a techy, just an tech enthusiast.

I locked my personal file through this and forgot my password. While trying to crack the password, the following came up. Just wanted to make people aware incase they are planning to keep something very confidential in this format.

regards,

Response2: You are absolutely right. But there is another way. After creation of the locked folder, you can shift the locker.bat file to another location known only to you. That way you have extra protection.

Just wanted to keep you guys updated....

Here is the procedure for getting any English song and  most Hindi songs in MP3 format -

- Go to http://www.youtube.com - http://www.youtube.com

- Type of name of the song. For eg: type  'teri deewani kailash kher'.

- Click on the video that has the highest number of 'views'. It means that the video and sound will be of good quallity.

- YouTube videos are in Macromedia Flash (.flv) format. To extract the .flv file, go to http://keepvid.com/ - http://keepvid.com/

- Insert the URL of 'Teri Deewani' ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rId1koBIpFM - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rId1koBIpFM ) into KeepVid. Make sure you select 'Youtube' in the drop down list and click on DOWNLOAD button.

- Copy the .flv file on the desktop (will be approx. 10 MB)

- Now we need a software that converts into .flv file into .mpeg (for storing videos) and .mp3 (for storing only the music) format.

- Moyea Software (free trial) does the job perfectly. You can download it from http://www.flvsoft.com/flv_to_video/ - http://www.flvsoft.com/flv_to_video/ . There are no restrictions on the usage of the trial version.

- Now you have freedom from buying CDs because everything is now FREE.

Hi all,

Here is one trick with Notepad

This is good for people who use notepad to write down any info on a day to day basis and would like to refer it later with the date & time.

Open a blank Notepad file

* Write .LOG [in all caps] (.LOG) as the first line of the file, followed by Enter”.

* Save the file.
* Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the
current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after.
* Type your notes and then save and close the file. Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending the time and date to the end of the notes you recently typed and placing the cursor below it.

I use Primo PDF for converting MS word files into pdf files which is quite good.

Could someone suggest a good free utility for converting PDF files back into MS Word? Have tried a few options but some text especially tables etc get a bit distorted.

You do get many "scan to word" softwares, basically useful to convert scanned files to text files. They can be used both for printed documents as well as handwritten documents, but are more effective if the hand writing are neat. (Like Mitali's handwriting!)
This is because these softwares work on character recognition concept, wherein each alphabet is treated as a picture and matched to the nearest alphabet. This does not give a 100% perfect conversion, since your font and styles of your print might gives a differnt match in the software, but when you have say ten fifteen pages, you can afford to correct /spellcheck these mistakes, rather than typing in the whole thing....

Hi

None are perfect 10. But u can try a combination of antivirus + Spyware & adaware killer for your machine.
For free you can try AVG ( anti virus) and BulletProofSoft ( adaware & spyware). This Bullerproofsoft is very effective.

I guess most of the people are interested in softwares which  hide critical  data...Well i am a tech savvy person....and i have  lot of knowledge about such softwares. For the past 6years I had been searching and evaluating such softwares.

The best I have ever come across is Magic folders. If anyone needs it then please let me know....i have a full version of it...

The best part about it is
1) It completly hides the drive and subdrives
2) Doesnt show the deficit in the HD space which is consumed by the hidden folders.
3) very secure
4)Its a very small software and doesnt take much space 800kb approx.

The Current best Anti virus is
Kaspersky

But usually you dont get the pirated version. Even if you get it, its only valid for a year and it goes num after that.

And yes no particular software is 100% safe,

But after a lot of evaluation (approx 3yrs). I personally consider the combination of Zone Alarm and Mcafee antivirus as the most effective antivirus tool.....

Its simply impossible to break the combination of both ....

......torrent files to get whatever you want

File Sharing Programs

File sharing program came to worldwide prominance with the release of Napster in 1999 by Shawn Fanning. Napster allowed people to share mp3 music files over the Internet. Since then a host of other file sharing programs have been released which allow users to exchange not only mp3 music files but images, movies and any other data files. Napster was quite a small program that only allowed users to download mp3 files, with later programs such as audiogalaxy and kazaa allowing users e to exchange different types of files. These files includes images, movie files (mpeg, avi), software files and much more.

One of the major problem users have experienced with file sharing programs has been adware/spyware. Some of the most notable file sharing companies have secretly installed adware/spyware programs with the installation of the main file sharing program. Viruses are another problem area, with many downloaded files including them. Luckily many file sharing programs are now stating they include no adware/spyware, and have facilities so you can scan every downloaded file for viruses.

Next was the crackdown on file sharing by record companies and the 'Recording Industry Association of America. They cited that downloading and uploading copyrighted materials without permission, violated international copyright infringement laws. Many users especially in the US have suffered fines or have settled out of court for fines over $2000. This has led to the release of programs like peerguardian which aim to stop organizations and individuals from collecting data about users without consent.

Below is a list of some of the most popular file sharing programs available at the moment, because there is an ever increasing amount of these, i've only listed the most popular,

BitTorrent

This program works slightly different to conventional file sharing programs. It allows users to use third party websites and locations to obtain the address of files 'called torrents' which contain all the download information. You easily find these sites by searching for 'torrents' in Google.

I used to use Norton 360, which used to cost something Rs 5400/- annual. However with that, there are several disadvantages. It used to block “Java Charts”, which is critical for my use.

Then, I tried Kaspersky after the advise of our network engineer and all programs are working fine. I fact, I still have a Norton 360, for which I have paid and am not using.

I have Kaspersky on all my machines, house and office. It actually costs Rs 2000/- and NOT Rs 2400/-.

Here's a software recommendation.....

How many of you have used proxy servers?

For the uninitiated on this subject, proxy servers are used when you wish to  disguise your IP address

Your IP address reveals your point of entry to the Internet and can be used to trace your communications back to your ISP, your employer's network, your school, a public terminal. Though your IP address may not identify you personally, an IP is a unique identifier which represents your computer's digital ID while you are online.

It is possible to disguise your IP address on the Web by using an anonymous proxy server. A proxy acts as an intermediary, routing communications between your computer and the Internet. A proxy specializing in anonymous surfing, however, uses its own IP address in place of yours in every outgoing request.

One such site is http://proxy.org/ - http://proxy.org/   try it out....

This is quite different, Kulman, the issue discussed in ET is with regards to providing false information while registering for e-mail ID. Using a proxy server is quite different . In fact, the US laws permit this to comply with "Right to Privacy " rules..

Amendments 9 and 10 of The United States http://usinfo.state.gov/products/pubs/outusgov/bill.htm - Bill Of Rights protect the right to be free of unwarranted and unwanted government intrusion into one's personal and private affairs, papers, and possessions. Article 12 of The United Nations http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html - Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks."
Anonymity also serves whistle blowers, free speech advocates, and people just looking for personal privacy online. Privacy is not a crime and anonymity is not morally ambiguous or wrong, they are your right.

Remember, Kulman, you and I are self appointed rebirths of Mahatma Gandhi, who incidentally was a lawyerWink, Chhota Shakeel and I have sighly different modes of operation, I use proxy servers, whereas he uses proxy..... , well , never mind.

While on the subject, as per Indian law, the onus of the material being posted on the net lies with the Server Porvider and the issue of leagality gets involved only in case the server is being used for illegal purposes.
The owner of an Open Proxy Server could possibly be held legally responsible for any illegal activities carried out through the Open Proxy Server under Sec. 43 and Sec. 66 of the Indian IT Act. The use of proxy servers therefore legal, as long as it is used for legal purposes, is permissible and sometimes even recommended for reasons mentioned in my previous post.

ON the other hand, Kulman, it does raise the possiblity of a foreign trip for people like you and me (and Basantji!). since some countries do permit defamation cases outside India, here are the facts, note how applicable they are in our case:

Recently, Australia’s Apex Court gave a landmark judgement concerning Internet defamation and jurisdiction, which promises to open up the Pandora’s Box in this direction. In the case entitled "Dow Jones v. Joseph Gutnick", the High Court of Australia has held that a defamation case arising out of a story on a United States web site can be heard in Australia.

The facts of the said case are that Dow Jones & Company Inc. prints and publishes the Wall Street Journal newspaper and Barron’s magazine. Dow Jones also operates the portal www.wsj.com, which is a subscription news site on the World Wide Web. Subscribers, who pay the subscription charges, are entitled to access the same by entering a username and password provided by Dow Jones. The edition of Barron’s Online for 28/10/2000 contained an article entitled "Unholy Gains" in which several references were made to the respondent Joseph Gutnick.

Gutnick brought an action in the Supreme Court of Victoria against Dow Jones claiming damages for defamation. In his action, Gutnick claimed that the said article defamed him by portraying him as a schemer given to stock scams, money laundering and fraud.

Dow Jones entered appearance and argued that the court was a clearly an inappropriate forum for trial proceedings and it had no jurisdiction because the relevant publication took place in USA. The primary judge held that the Australian Court had jurisdiction to try the matter. The case went to the Court of Appeal of Victoria and finally came up for hearing before the High Court of Australia.

Before the High Court, the principle issue debated was, as to where was the alleged defamatory material, of which Gutnick complained, published? Was it published in Victoria? Dow Jones argued that the publication of the article occurred at its servers maintained in New Jersey in the United States and, therefore, an Australian Court could not assume jurisdiction over the matter.

In a landmark judgment, the High court of Australia has held that the Australian Court indeed has the jurisdiction to try an action for defamation concerning an article, which was hosted at the servers of Dow Jones in the United States of America.

The court held that the law of defamation seeks to strike a balance between, on the one hand, society's interest in freedom of speech and the free exchange of information and ideas (whether or not that information and those ideas find favour with any particular part of society) and, on the other hand, an individual's interest in maintaining his or her reputation in society, free from unwarranted slur or damage.

The majority judgment further held that Internet is no more ubiquitous than some television services. It was held that those who post information on the World Wide Web do so knowing that the information that they provide is available to all sundries, without any geographical restrictions.

The High court further held that defamation is to be located at the place where the damage to the reputation occurs. The High Court said that it is only the place where any person downloaded the defamatory material that the damage to reputation may be done Following this principle, the court held that an action for damages for defamation can be continued in Australia against a US web site.

The net result of this judgement is that having been rendered by the highest court in Australia, the judgement can act as a precedent for all courts in the world, and thus enable Internet to be amenable to worldwide jurisdiction.

This judgement promises to have wide ranging implications for the entire online publishing industry. It opens up a legal minefield for web publishers, over which defamation, libel and other laws must follow. The said judgment is not only likely to impact the freedom of speech of media organizations, but it could also expose publishers to legal actions all over the world. Complex global issues regarding Internet publications have been raised, that would require further refinement and development over a period of time.

The principle enunciated by the High Court of Australia is likely to stand in conflict with emerging jurisprudence relating to jurisdiction, that has developed as per different case laws in different countries.

It is feared that one of the consequences of the emergence of jurisprudence like this is that online publishers may become very cautious and fearing litigation, may use new technologies to deny access to readers in other countries. Such an approach is likely to undermine the global nature of the Internet.

To a large extent, the decision of the High Court of Australia is clearly practical, based upon common sense and pragmatic interpretation of existing principles of law. However, I still feel that we would to need to adopt a more rational, practical and pragmatic approach before the law on jurisdiction over the Internet evolves fully.

In the context of India, this emerging jurisprudence really means that Web Publishers will have to be very careful of what content they publish. Further by virtue of the Indian Cyber law, ISPs are liable for all third party content including defamatory data and they would be required to remove the defamatory material from the sites the moment they become aware of it. In addition, publishers and Internet Service Providers will have to exercise due diligence in order to prevent exposure to unnecessary libel or defamation litigation.

The said judgement has made Internet amenable to global jurisdiction, which would create serious conflict of jurisdictions, more so in the case of persons having a regional or a world reputation. As a consequence, publishers will now have to be aware of defamation laws of the entire range of countries before they publish anything on the World Wide Web.

The Australian approach also raises issues of enforceability of such a judgment. Already, in the Yahoo! Case last year, a US court has held that no US court will enforce any ruling of any foreign court, if the same is in violation of the fundamental principles of the First Amendment to the US Constitution. Following this precedent, courts in different parts of the world may not enforce judgements of foreign courts if the same do not comply with the basic principles enshrined in the Constitution of the respective countries.

Currently, the position is unclear and it will take time before the law on this subject really develops. However, the first salvo has already been fired. It would be interesting to see how the law develops on this front over a period of time.

In continuation of my earler post for using proxy servers to logging on to the net, here's a bit of advice for those who use public PCs, network office PCs to login to the net and communicate sensitive information including login and passwords---
----  USE A VIRTUAL KEYBOARD

A virtual keyboard is a feature of a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_program - computer program or a program in and of itself that acts as a virtual extension of a controller, often with fewer buttons than a keyboard would have. In the world of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_computer - desktop PCs , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-Screen_Keyboard - On-Screen Keyboard acts as a virtual keyboard that can be operated with an actual keyboard or a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_mouse - computer mouse .

Because virtual keyboards function differently from physical text input devices, they  provide a good  degree of protection against http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystroke_logging - keystroke logging . (Keyboard logging is when , using a software, someone is recording the keys of the keyboard you punch in , so that passwords and other confidential information can be retrived once you log out.)

......torrent files to get whatever you want

--------------------------------------

Could you please elaborate? What's torrent?
Life can only be understood backwards—but it must be lived forwards
Well torrents basically run on the concept of P2P...But you dont have to know the nitty gritties of that....
Its basically millions of users share their stock of softwares, movies ect...

All you have to do is download a software called Utorrent or azureus etc...(utorrent is the best according to me)which is completely free...you can search it over google and download it from the respective website.
Once you are done with that...go to any torrent websites like piratebay, torrentspy ect...There you could search for your material...for eg: if you want Mcafee...then you would enter mcafee and hit enter...it would give you all the links...download the torrent file from the links to your pc....after which open the torrent file with the UTorrent....and it would do the rest....

I hope the explanation wasnt very complicated...If you find it complicated then try wikipedia or google torrent files .

Torrent is the best way of getting whatever you want over the internet....

Thanks for that info.

I read in a magazine about "How to copy videos from flash viewers (FLV format)":

YouTube videos are in FLV format which can't be right-clicked for copying. Use http://www.keepvid.com - www.keepvid.com  which is a browser based service, so you don't need to download any application. After you have found a video you want to save to your PC, enter the URL of video & select its originating site.

Any other alternatives?

Here is some useful information for all.

Most people CTRL+C  key combination very regularly on the keyboard

Ctrl+C may be the most important work we do everyday. But it's not a very safe thing to do. Read on to know why.

What happens when you press Ctrl+C while you are On-line... We do copy various data by Ctrl + C for pasting elsewhere.

This copied data is stored in clipboard and is accessible from the net by

a combination of java-script's and ASP.

Just try this:

1) Copy any text by Ctrl + C

2) Click the Link: <

IN times like these, every penny countsCry,!
The Income Tax Department has put on its website the list of income tax refunds of all salary tax payers which could not be sent to the concerned  persons for want of correct address.
Salary taxpayers who have not received refunds for assessment years 2003\04  to 2006\07 can click on the link below and query using the PAN number and
assessment year whether any refund due to them has been returned undelivered from the menu `undelivered salary refund management system'.
If any refund has been returned undelivered due to change in address, then the  taxpayer can enter the
present address and the refund will be sent to the taxpayer at the new address.
The link to the website is as under:

Why?    This is because............. "CON" is a reserved keyword in DOS / Windows which stands for Console Device. Creating a file or a folder with reserved keywords for WINDOWS is not allowed in all MS Operating Systems. For the same reason we may not / can't create file or folder with name like CON, AUX, COM1, COM2, LPT1, NUL, etc.
