I am a skeptic when it comes to IPO. A 184 year old company coming out with an IPO to raise 200 crores to expand their business. This money would be loose change for such an old business group. Why do they need the 200 crores from the public to expand?

I see two possibilities:-

1. They will use the public money to take risks and expand mindlessly thereby destroying shareholder value.

2. They will show good results for some more quarters and ride the consumption boom. They may be thinking they will get the valuations of Titan being a Jeweler. Rather they should realize that Titan is a brand more than a Jeweler.

If they do not do any of the two above, I will be very happy for the shareholders.

A bull market craze may give them the valuations they are looking for, but I am giving it a pass.

Personally I have never been much interested in IPOs, and never invested for listing gains. So I have a bias here. It is a small offering - so if the listing gains are enormous, then the allocation will be minimal. If the  allocation is very high, then we may have to hold the bag for a long time.

Most of the brokerage firms are recommending to AVOID this IPO based on valuation concerns vis-a-vis its strong brand.. Subscription figures till 5 pm today is only 0.2 times, which is also not encouraging... One should exercise caution here....
