AGM
          Tata Power
Despite the issues on the pricing front, the Mundra UMMP project will get commissioned around Sep-Oct'11

The company held its AGM on 24th Aug'11 and was addressed by Mr. Ratan Tata, Chairman

Key highlights
Current generation capacity of the company stands at around 3180 MW. During FY'11, company added about 525 MW, which is the Unit 1 of Maithon Mega Power project. Capacity of about 550000 MW is under implementation at various stages. Overall, the management has indicated that it is on target to achieve 25000 MW capacities by 2017.
Management has indicated that there are various issues domestically like environmental clearance; land availability, fuel linkages etc hurting both the investments in power sector and delaying the ongoing projects.
On issue of the Indonesian Coal, management has indicated that it expects the issue will get resolved soon and is expecting support from both Indian and Indonesian government regarding the import of coal in India. Despite the issues on the pricing front, the Mundra UMMP project will get commissioned on time, which is around Sep-Oct'11. The losses if any due to high imported coal prices will be temporary and the management is also working with the SEBs in this regard.
Tata Power has about 30% stake in two of the mining companies in Indonesia. During CY'10 (Since the Indonesian entity follows calendar year), the overall mining quantity of coal stood at about 60 MT vis a vis about 63 in CY'09, while the average realization per ton stood at about US $ 71 as against about US $ 63 in CY'09.
The company is continuously in search for assets across the globe. To achieve the generation capacity, it would require ensuring fuel linkages both domestically and through international resources.
Tata power has also plans to venture into nuclear power in future.
Every day, self-proclaimed stock market "experts" tell us why the market just went up or down, as if they really knew. So where were they yesterday?

Hi Shontou,

thank you.  All this info is available in the company's Annual Report, so nothing new.

Does anyone know how the assured income factor is determined for power companies, specially in light of Reliance Power having bagged contracts at Rs 2 per unit - which was the lowest price ever - how will such projects make money?

Also, any thoughts on what impact inflation and consequential increased cost of inputs and increased interest rates will have on power companies?

1. Either various managements were fool hardy while calculating numbers for their bids.

2. They bid low so that they can win the bid and then
    - raise money from Banks
    - increase their market cap

We can only guess

Power plants based on imported coal will see serious challenges. Coal will be treated as national property like oil and barrier for export from origin countries will only go up in future.

I am not sure that "managements were fool hardy while calculating numbers for their bids".  Reliance's lowest quote was around Rs 2/unit, but Tata also had a quote of Rs 2.25/unit or so.

I don't understand how a company could enter into an agreement for selling price and also have an assured return.  Does it mean that UMPP (Ultra Mega Power Projects) have no assured returns?  Or have the rules changed for the entire sector?  Can anyone enlighten?
