Devesh...Technically there are 17.5 gotra's.

The legend has it that King Agrasen had 18 wifes, with the 18th one being from a "Small caste", so she was rewarded with half gotra. The half gotra is "Kansal".

BasantJi...All marvari's are NOT bania's.
I would try to write something about this ASAP.

Devesh...great to know you are a "Goyal" too. Smile

I have this small theory about why Marwaris and Gujaratis have business flowing in thier blood and let me share that here.

See Gujarat and Rajasthan were barren land nothing grew in the fields and the men folk had to travel far and wide to trade-this made them good at business and even that money was difficult to store since they did not buy land (as it was useless) they bought jewellery gold diamonds etc. That is why an average marwari family has a decent amount of inherited jewellery.

Now for the dress the dhoti and kurta are good for the warm weather and also one could take a quick bath and then put it up for drying and in 30 minutes it would be ready. So that facilitated its use.Wink

Basant,
Adversity is your greatest Teacher . Over Centuries the people of Marwar have braved all odds and wars and with little resources. But the biggest Resource they developed is " The will to do it" . Though I am not a Marwari, but being a refugees kin  (partition of 1947) one can understand what difficult times can bring out of you.

Thanks Bubblevision for clearing my doubt that not all marwaris are banias....we call kirana store owners, bania and majority of them are from Pali-Marwad...

Yes Devesh....There are two types of Marvari's ..."Bhianya" (Those of whom are from Haryana) and "Bagru", those are from Rajasthan.

I am from Haryana ...Beri (Dist Jhajjar). So we are also called "Beriwala"

"Bagru's" ..are further subdivided, based on District on which they belong to.

Bania's are marvari's who are from a certain district of Rajasthan. I dont know the exact district's name.

Maharaja Agrasen Ji ka mandir bhi hain, Hissar (Haryana) main. I have visited it.

I didnt know all this...come on guys aur gyaan barao! I always thought Banias, Marvaris all are one and the same.

Hey by the way, just out of curiosity...does anyone know of any bania who like went onto the path of sainthood. I mean like a Vivekanand, RamaKrishna or Sankaracharya(known names that is). I think there is a good possibility of at least one widely-known such marvari or bania from past till date.

Just curious that is all Big%20smile

The most important quality for an investor is temperament, not intellect.A temperament that neither derives great pleasure from being with the crowd nor against it

Om...Bania's are only 10-15% of the total Marvaris.

Bihanya's (Haryana wala) are approx 30% of the total marvari's and Bagru's are 70%. Bania's are 10-15% of the 70%.

I just need to eat food in any marvari's house to identify, is he from Haryana or from Rajasthan.

The biggest difference between Har and Raj is that ....Raj's drink "aamras -mango shake" in a "Catori - bowl" and the Har's drink it in a Glass. Tongue
