Is this restriction for Set top box or Dish?

When there is no power at your area, eventhough if you have standby power arrangement (UPS), you may still not get transmission because cablewala may not have alternate power arrangement.
In the case of DTH players, since it is transmission directly from satellite, this problem will not be there.

Sun Direct to double its subscribers
Sun Direct, a direct-to-home (DTH) service provider, aims to double its subscriber base to six million from the present 3.1 million and will invest Rs 150 crore this fiscal as a part of its marketing initiatives.
"Sun Direct crossed the three-million subscriber mark as of March 31. Our active subscriber base is now 3.1-million. We will add at least three-million active subscribers in 2009-10.We also plan to spend Rs 150 crore in marketing this year,'' Sun Direct TV Chief Operating Officer, Mr Tony D'Silva told reporters here on Wednesday.
The Chennai-headquartered company, which began operations in September 2007, announced the launch of High Definition (HD) broadcast on a DTH platform. HDTV will improve the viewer experience by about five times over regular television.
Sun Direct, an 80:20 joint venture between the Chennai-based Maran family and Malaysia's Astro Group, has consistently maintained a share of 40 per cent in all DTH sales since January, Mr D'Silva said.

Now that Maran family has patched with Mr. Karunanidhi's family, they will just flood TN market.
It is only point of time before they overtake Dish as Sun is very famous in TN as well as S.India.

Yes it's very much evident from Sun's fast pace subs acquisition. In 1.5 years they have made it 3 million and for 09-10 the target is to just double it. If they keep the pace, may be in this year itself Sun will be able to overtake Dish TV India.
BTW CHINKI Jee, although I think Sun Digital is an unlisted entity, how about their finacial health? Do you have any idea by when they will go to + territory?

Looks like their first motto is to grab the customers.
They were first to start with Rs.75/- per month package. Other players had no choice but to follow. Unlike Dish & Tata Sky, rest other players are offering MPEG-3 format which is costly. So if they are matching Dish & Tata Sky offers, then they will be loosing more per subscriber.
I had read in one of the report almost 6 months back that their ARPU is Rs.75/- which is almost half of what Dish's ARPU.
If SUN is acquiring lower class as their subscribers, then it will be difficult for them to raise monthly fee plus expect anything from these customers in value added services.
While no. of subscribers are very important for breakeven but so is ARPU.
As per the media reports and interview given by their MD, Dish has already become EBIDTA positive from Jan'09 as they passed on Service Tax on to their subscribers.
I am not sure whether Sun have done that. We will have to see if they do it, then they should also become EBITDA positive once they cross 5million subs.
