C) Looks like you bought Trent at Rs. 160/share. What was the P/E at that time ?

Pantaloon Market cap at that time was around Rs 80 crores with expected sales for that year Fy 03 - Rs 450 crores.

Market cap of Tv 18 at that time was Rs 200 crores. Not sure on this but it probably traded at 3-4 times mkt cap to sales. The PE was for Fy 03.

Trent's retailing business was making a loss and the only EPS Rs 13 (I think) was from the income it earned from its investments.

It has been 3 years so a bit hard to dig into history!

Basantji,

Is Satnam Overseas a value stock which would turn into growth and hence become a multibagger in next 3 years....

I would not hold you responsible if it does not ... but just asking your views on  - Is it today's candidate of what TV18, Pantaloon have been 3-4  years back ?

Also, is VSNL news on land unlocking ? Shall we buy on news and sell after the demereger ?

Thanx as always  !

VSNL- the land is probably with the govt. and only shareholders who had tendered in the open offer would be given stake in the demerged company so i am not sure if we could run it asa a demerger candidate- That is what i could make out . But as Manish says VSNL should benefit irrespective of the land deal.

Kohinoor Foods is not that big multibagger we keep looking for it is a good company and should do well but cannot compare it with the others that you mentioned.

I don’t necessarily agree with the fact that value investors buy stocks in hope that they will unlock in 2 years. When you buy value your job is to find value and wait. People bought McDowell in 2001-2002-2003 those who bought in 2001 waited 4 years and those who bought in 2003 waited 2. However in McDowell’s case there was a dividend yield, so it’s unfair to use that example.

I think market timing is generally not a forte of a value investor. Ability to see the opportunity yes, a catalyst again is hard to imagine.

I have learnt more often than not management themselves miss the large opportunity and it is the opportunity itself that acts like a catalyst.

I agree with T-Rex. The period of waiting may be long or short depending upon the discovery of the fundamental. To predict spurts, is wasting time. But T-Rex, dividend yoeld hunting would have fetched you wonderful gains during the doldrum period of 2001-2004. I bought OBC at 36(average) and sold it off at various levels between 108 and 277. I bought SRF at 33 and sold it off at various levels between 133 and 323 and am playing this game with the same money and with 11000 odd investment, I am now making 4000 odd rs. as dividend everyyear...and I am sure, this would have been every person's experience if they have invested for dividends during that period.
