The October numbers are out and the company seems to be on track. This is the link to that. As usual the expansion plan indicated is mind boggling.

Mark Mobius mentioned Retailing in his interview and I just saw that some of the Franklin funds have bought Pantaloon Retail last month. This seems to be an interesting lead!.

Any idea why Pantaloon retail is not focussing on the South ?
They don't have hardly any Big Bazaar or Food Bazaar in Chennai.. While they are focussing more on North & Central India ..

Chennai no doubt has one of the highest upper middle class population and thriving IT & ITES services...

Beats me..Hmm..

Often we forget there's a company behind every stock, and there's only one reason why stocks go up. Companies go from doing poorly to doing well or small companies grow to large companies.

Yes, I have read "The Wal Mart way" in fact I read that book to get a hang of the business. The company  went public in early 70's and continued growing till the early 90's. The first disastor did not come before 20 years of existence. That is because when the markjet expands companies do not spend much on efficiencies and the whole set of companies continue to expand. It is only after growth stops to happen that companies start looking at efficiencies and that drives the inefficient p-layers away. HLL never talked about power brands prior to 2001. This is some place to get details of wal mart achieved. It does not cover the company from inception which can be seen obtained from the website.

YOu maake a valid point not sure why they are not targetting Chennai. Most of the time these companies take up one city and go full blast at it for example if they have 2 or 10 Big bazaars in Bangalore then the cost of placing a paper ad would be same but the mileage derived would drastically vary.
