Topic: CAR PARKS: Potential Business Sector Posted: 09/Dec/2007 at 2:34pm |
Any idea of major listed players in this sector??
With one among 10 Indians already owning a motor vehicle, parking lots in the country could earn an estimated Rs 5,500 crore annually by 2010.
According to an estimate by 'Dare', a magazine for entrepreneurs, parking lots in five big cities could fetch Rs 3,281 crore while those in other cities Rs 1,732 crore.
Onsite advertisements in parking areas could collect a revenue of another Rs 501 crore.
The figure was reached by calculating the existing parking spaces, including multi-storey parking lots and shopping malls, besides those likely to come up in the next three years.
It is roughly estimated that out of 8,760 hours in an year, on an average a car runs for 400 hours or so, leaving the remaining 95 per cent of its time in parking, it said.
There are about 40 cities in India with million-plus population where multi-level parking facilities can be effectively used, according to Dare.
Commercial utilisation of the parking premises and user fee collection are the primary sources of return from the investments.
Moreover, the manufacture of many of the equipment, which were hitherto imported paying hefty duties, also promises good business opportunities.

Annuity revenues. Boring business.
And I would rather park my car in front of somebody's house and put a board on my car -
Please do not put a gate infront of my car

This post is quite irrelevant here, but just thought of posting it..
One of the best business model I observed in Mumbai , is when I first started my job few years back.
Around any temple or a holy place in Mumbai , there is a lady or a guy with a cow and ghasphus.. You buy the ghaspus from the lady and give it to the cow and get some Punya in return !! Any better business than this ???

I think that one of the listed Simplex companies is into this but like a toll bridge this business model has its own strengths and weaknesses.

DLF to build multi-level car parks
DLF would develop and operate two multilevel car parking complexes for New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in the city. The car parks, to be built at Baba Kharag Singh Marg and Sarojini Nagar here, would have retail/commercial space on the ground and first floors.
An investment of Rs 150 crore would be made for Baba Kharag Singh Marg and Rs 85 crore for Sarojini Nagar project. The projects are to be commissioned before Commonwealth Games.
These projects have been offered on concession period of 30 years to DLF, said a release, adding that these projects will have retail/commercial area on ground and first floor, and car parking on the upper floors, it added. Baba Kharag Singh Marg project will have space for 1,408 cars and Sarojini Nagar Market can accommodate 824 cars.
