Stocks of brokerages catch investors’ fancy

Betting on new product offerings, spread of online broking

With more broking firms entering the public domain by way of capital floats – Motilal Oswal was the last player to do so – the sector is expected to emerge stronger in the days ahead, feel market circles aware of the trend.

The drivers include an increase in product offerings, spread of online broking, access to newer markets through branch/franchisee expansion and the like. Such factors, seen in the backdrop of the country’s new-found enthusiasm for investing in the capital market in an era of decent corporate earnings, will influence investors even more in future, it is felt.

WHile terminal is a good way to look at these companies it is not the best way. COmpares quite like evaluating a bank on the number of branches because a company with 10 terminals can do as much buisness with another having 40.

But it was informative to know that Angel has been ahead of all the others in this race.

I guess it is easy to get advertisement among target customers by more & more terminals. A guy sitting at home/office, trading on-line hardly adds any fame to his/her broker. Most of the brokers needs advertisement more so that they can encash it into IPO price.

Edelweiss Capital IPO Analysis

Company:Edelweiss Capital (ECL)
Industry:Financial Services
Issue Date:The issue will open on November 15, 2007, and will close on November 20 2007.
Price Band:Rs 725 and Rs 825 per equity share of face value Rs 5.
Recommendation:Apply

Investment Rationale:

  • Financial services sector is just starting to expand and there is huge untapped potential in left which is all set to benefit diversified financial products companies like Edelweiss Capital.
  • Strong finanmcial growth by the company in the past few years, a CAGR of 130% in the topline. The FY 07 revenue stood at 74.8 crores.
  • To reduce the dependency on a single business (earlier of only investment banking),the company has diversified its business into agency & capital business. This will fuel more revenue growth and also diversify the risks associated with a single business.
  • The company had low presence with the retail investors segment and when it enters that segment it will offer huge potential growth and added revenues.

CRISIL has assigned an IPO Grade “4/5” to this issue. This rating indicates that the fundamentals of ECL are above average relative to other listed equity securities in India.

In all a good issue to consider investing in for long term gains and also listing gains.
