Naah! I think I woke up from a really nice dream. But it seemed so real. Nice feeling though.

I like Mukesh's way..

On his retail venture, He is focussing on margins more than sales ....

The problem with these 2nd generation folks is that we don't become part of the multi-baggers..

But i am confident that EVEN TODAY the profit margin of Reliance Fresh is far higher than Big Bazaar .. and this is scalable as well ...

The sales of Reliance Fresh is 25% of nearest Big Bazaar, but profits are same..

Its totally different to start building a retail empire by first focussing on margins (Mukesh) rather than getting market share (sales, biyani way) first and then start tweaking the model by having more of higher margin products (biyani's own brands strategy)

Its hard to beat the competition that has early mover advantage (Biyani) because brand loyality gets build !

But i like the place where Mukesh is focussing on - just that i am not able to get shares of Reliance Retail !

Biyani would do well after 5 years hence, but Reliance Retail would be the King !

Basantji,

The exact numbers are not there, but the pointers/feelers to the profit margins are following:

1) India Business Hour on day-before CNBC covered a 2 min. report on reliance fresh and higher profit margin was the main summary ! Similiar to the points i raised....

2) One recent business magazine has reliance retail as the cover story .. i dont remember if its business today or business india but something like that ... its the cover story ..

read that article and it would give more insight on how they are toooo much focussing on profit margins ....

they are exploiting the middle-man profits by buying vegetables DIRECTLY from the farmers ... they are eliminating the MANDI and so in-efficient supply-chain where food gets travelled ...

and in reliance fresh, they don't have even single toothpaste, soap ... nothing .. coz the margins are low there .. all they have is fresh fruits & vegetables...

and CNBC IBH stated even with such small list of items (only fruits, vegetables) sales of one reliance fresh are 25% of nearby big bazaar ..

I would actually like to see these retails honchos sell food items: vegetables, dals, wheat, maida, fruits etc. at much lower prices than the local sabzee wala. That would really be a truly retail-day.

Uhmmm! How about a set of babes enticing you to buy a particular brand of potatoes on an adveryisement on TV. Just like girls are there with cars.

Ah! I can almost see it at the International Veg. Expo Show...vegetables lined up and models wearning skimping clothes showcasing them.
