DTH service: Tamil Nadu Govt keeps options open
Chennai, Sep 21 : A day after private Tamil satellite channel Sun TV, owned by the Marans, came out with a proposal to introduce DTH service, the Tamil Nadu Government today said it was keeping open the option of launching its own such service.
Sun TV had announced introduction of DTH service, apparently to counter the State Government's decision to set up Arasu Cable TV Corporation to end the monopoly of SCV, owned by the Marans, who had fallen out of grace with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

BSNL Blames Content Partners For IPTV Delay
Content providers Zee and ESPN-STAR Sports (ESS) are yet to confirm IPTV packages to BSNL, and Sony (NYSE: SNE) has only just done so reports the Financial Express. This delay in confirming content for IPTV is what is holding IPTV back. Without all the content packages ready, BSNL is not going to publicise the service. The service is going to be launched October 1 onwards in Kolkata, with 80 channels, and BSNL claims that around 3500 people have already registered for it.
These delays will cost IPTV dearly, since they’re racing against DTH and CAS systems for locking in users in India. The cost of subscribing to CAS or DTH is more than Rs. 3000 per TV set, and I think that’s going to deter consumers from switching, even if IPTV is a superior technology. With the likes of DishTV and Tata Sky advertising aggressively, and CAS deadlines slipping away, IPTV is fighting a losing battle.

CABLE TV OPERATORS PROTEST SCV'S LAUNCHING OF DTH
Cable TV operators in the city today protested the decision of Sumangali Cable Vision, owned by Maran brothers, to launch Direct to Home service.
The operators held protests at the Multi System Operator's office at Uthangudi near here and stopped the telecast of various TV channels, an operator said.
The operators maintained that the decision would affect their livelihood.
The MSO had announced an attractive DTH service from today which would provide 75 channels and 15 radio channels for just Rs 75 a month, Rs.25 more than what the Government planned to give the subscribers of the state-owned Cable TV network.
The Sumangali Cable Vision was also offering dish antenna and set-top boxes free of cost.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports said that the cables laid by Sumangali Vision were snapped at nearly 200 places in the city. Nothing was known about who all were behind the "sabotage", some cable operators said.

Sun TV, Kalaignar TV battle for eyeballs
The war between Sun TV and Kalaignar TV has gone to the skies quite literally.
Sun network owned by the Maran brothers grand nephews of TN CM Karunanidhi have launched their no frills DTH.
It costs just Rs 75 a month, the dish and the set top box technically come free. The stunning offer comes just a week after the launch of Karunanidhi's family controlled Kalaignar TV following a rift between both families.
While the state government is all set to enter cable distribution, allegedly to promote the ruling party backed channel.
This is seen as a competitor's attempt to continue monopoly in the business. But the offer had its repercussion with cable operators taking the battle to the streets after snapping cable links in many areas. They say the price war will hit them hard.
Defending the new pricing by SCV, the cable arm of Sun TV, former union IT minister says this is inevitable in a competitive environment.
While television channels in Tamil Nadu have always been politically coloured in the weeks ahead customers may have to absorb the aftershocks of this price war.

Videocon gets I&B nod for DTH
The war in the DTH segment is all set to intensify with consumer electronics giant Videocon’s venture getting a letter of intent (LoI) from the information and broadcasting ministry to offer these services.
Sources told FE that Videocon’s DTH venture—Bharat Business Channel—has been given the nod by the I&B ministry and the company is now gearing up to firm up roll-out plans for its DTH platform, where the initial investments are likely in the range of Rs 600 crore.
Media industry analysts say the DTH market will see a major growth in the coming years and fuel subscription revenues of the TV industry. Government’s increased focus on digitalisation of TV content delivery and shift towards addressable systems (that allow subscribers to view and pay only for channels of their choice) is likely to see more numbers in the DTH segment.
The company is understood to be looking initially at six Ku-band transponders for launching its direct-to-home (DTH) service and has already approached the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) for this.
The TV manufacturer is believed to be working on striking synergies through its existing business. It already makes analogue set-top boxes and has a sizeable distribution network that can be exploited.

Bharti Airtel today said it has got licence to start Direct-To-Home services in the country and announced an investment of Rs 150 crore in the first phase to launch nation-wide operations, a move that would bring in much required competition in the DTH segment.
"We have received the licence and plan to launch pan-India services by the first quarter of next financial year," N Arjun, head of DTH operations, Bharti Airtel, said.
