CAS rollout in metros hits roadblock
NEW DELHI: The mandatory rollout of the controversial conditional access system (CAS) in the remaining areas of the metros and its extension to cities with a population of a million, including all state capitals has hit a roadblock.
Government sources told ET that Information and Broadcasting ministry has decided to conduct a detailed technical consumer and account audit across these cities before notifying the date for the CAS rollout.
This implies that the earlier plan, under which CAS was to be extended to 19 major cities in the country from 2008 will not be implemented now. The cities include Jaipur, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Nagpur, Gandhinagar, Simla, Bhopal, Thane, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Secundrabad and Chandigarh as well as satellite towns of the metros such as Navi Mumbai, Thane, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida and Gurgaon.
