Such labour intensity is definitely a curse and is something which cannot be disturbed as repercussions of the same will see people living on roads in India.
I do sometime think that what is the aim of any sector/company in an economy to increase productivity or to generate employment.We can't have a business in a "free" economy for generating employment ,if generating employment is the main priority why not get rid of machines/computers and have everyone employed , how many jobs have been lost due to themAlso how many Chinese & Indians have got American company jobs & their own people are unemployed, as companies aim is to increase productivity & minimize costs not to generate employmentAlthough i m not a fan of it , but In capitalism all concentration should be on increasing productivity even if it means job losses , we can't have jobs only for sake of itWhat we do need is better labor laws to stop labor exploitation

Its true that many unskilled laborers will loss their job. But in states like kerala there is huge shortage for unskilled workers. Reduction of small shops will help reduce unproductive works and wastage of vegetables.
The Indian government is not able to enforce basic rural penetration contracts signed with telco players or cheap housing/enviromental contracts with real estate players.
(We all know why) The story on oil exploration contracts is unfolding.
To think that this sort of government can enforce SME buying limits with retail players does not seem right.
This is very true observation. Defense offset is being misused blatantly by out sourcing bording and lodging work to India (some small out fits who again route the remaining money back to MNCs).
Yup, as soon as retail is allowed a lot of manufacturing in India will move to China. Offcourse, it's moving anyway but retailers will only speed up the process.
Retailers -> manufacturers -> China
China thoroughly deserves to succeed since they have taken the trouble to become world's manufacturer but atleast we should be truthful
True we need to lot of prudence and thought process in policy making in today's tubulent world.
We are trying to follow decades old western world policies which are them selves being questioned today.
Our policies should focus on achieving better Human Dev Index for a large population we have rather than chasing lop-sided short term growth. Lot of this may not show up on balance sheet and please markets in short term.
