Kaun rokega???? Sugar causes obesity and causes diabetes and other lots of associated ailments, so shall we ban the use of sugar? Consuming alcohol is bad for society, has these countries named in the report imposed a ban on them???
Dont confuse ethics with business...and dont mix them up too much. Its the job of the Law to decide to when the business is breaching the accepted level, not us. Intervene when you can provide the alternative solution, otherwise you end up creating a bigger mess.
Now, surely we cannot afford to put the coming generation to risk...surely we cant. So, develop a road-map....like phasing out of gasoline guzzling vehicles and replacing them with those which follow high emission standards. Dont ban, but give a period for a phase-out during which you can implement your plan.
Understand the constraints.....You are talking about risk in tobacco companies.....read ITC's Annual Report. The health hazard is posed more by products of unorganised sector. Moreover, they dont pay excise duties and other levies. How to curb that menace....is the society ready for that kind of action?
Now think about who uses asbestor sheets, mainly the rural households. Can everyone migrate from mud-roofed/tiled roof house directly to a pucca house. No.....but wont they like to have a better protection than what the mud-roofed/tiled roof house offers...they would. Would he/she listen to this argument of asbestos being a cause of cancer and decide against using it.....he wont.
As an investor, I wont like my company to be producing something which puts the lives of people at risk....but then, why the heck shall I beleive anyone which comes out with a study showing the health hazards of asbestos sheet production. There are studies which can be shown to support the counter-argument.
