Topic: What's your most profound learning/insight? Posted: 13/Jan/2010 at 11:50am
All of us here at TED have spent considerable time in the markets and we have all learnt some profound lessons along the way. Most lessons we learnt when we lost money and some when we made a potful .I have read that there is a lot of power in FOCUS.So if i ask you distill all your experience and come up with that one learning that you think is the most profound, what would it be? In other words,if there was just one thing you could tell your son/daughter when they start investing their money, what would it be?
Coming up with an answer is tougher than it really seems.

The most profound lesson has been told by the most profound investor. "Avoid Big mistakes". Sounds too easy to be important but it deserves more focus then is actually given to it.

My most profound insight has been, equities outperform all other asset classes over once's lifetime. So be 100% invested in equities. And read Chapter 8 of The intelligent investor atleast ten times.

There is no other teacher like experience. No amount of 'theory' from books or magazines can help learn investing as much as actually putting in hard earned money and losing some part of it.
@Basantji. How would i know beforehand that whatever i am doing is wrong? Then how would avoid "Big Mistakes". All I will come to know whether I did right or wrong only after I commit the thing.
