Seems TATA investments is invested in both GIC and Gruh... so i would go buy TATA investments. he he!!!
actually i arleady have.. and now i am only waiting for it to fall , so i can buy more .. MORE!!!

As far as finance companies are concerned, i have gone out and bought a totally unrelated company, which is Tourism finance corp of india.
Thought what the hell, maybe someday, tourism sector will pick up in india, and this 24 rupees stock will be something like LIC housing finance price someday..

Interestingly, my masi (mom's sister) had bought LIC house finance shares , 2000 of them, several years back at rs.35.00 each. They were until last month in physical form, as she had not even bothered to dmat them.
Then one day on TV they were talking about LIC and how it had run up and she thought to herself... wait a minute.. i think i have some share connected somehow with LIC....so she checked the share...

LO and behold, it was the same.
Now of coarse, it quotes at rs.850.00 and she is a major gainer, all because she forgot that she even had the shares.

Time in the market and not timing the market!!!!!!!!!Clap

One of the reasons that encouraged me to hold GIC Housing was that Tata's held it as well for quite a while. So I didn't really bother that the stock was not praised to the skies anywhere else.

Do try and find out how long your maasi has being holding the LIC paper. Then work out the CAGR. That would surely vindicate the time in the market argument.

What percentage of Tata Investment's market cap is in the form of these desired holdings. It would not be a bad exercise to work that out.Wink

Surprisingly little information available at first glance!
Of course, a certain "TED fellow" will discover a site and provide a helpful link Wacko

Yes, hiteshji,
While i had rough info about their portfolio, yet i have gone gaga over the stock, i still have to receive my first annual report and i am sure that contains the list of stocks (listed and unlisted ) that they own....One thing is for sure though, that out of so many stocks i have purchased over time, this one makes me feel very happy!- I dont know why ?

Nothing like good promoters at the end of the day, i guess!!

Most interesting is the following which makes a case for secular growth in excess of GDP:

"But I can tell you that penetration is very low, shortage of housing in India is massive and one must also recognize that demographics in India are such that the housing market has to grow. About 60% of India’s population is below 30 years of age. Typically, a person finishes his post graduation at the age of 23-24 and then he then take up a job and would work for couple of years. So he would be working between 24-25-26 then he would get married, so marriage happens in mid-20s.

Again it’s a custom in India particularly with middle income people that the married couple will stay with the boys parents for a few years and then you get children. The children start going to school and then the extended becomes too large for the parents house, which they occupy, which is the time they look to buy a house.

So the average age of our borrower is 35 years and its not people in the 20’s who are buying houses but people in the mid-30s who are buying houses and with 60% of the population being below 30years of age – all these people will over the next 5-15 years will need housing."

That was in 2001-02. Interest rates started coming down rapidly and realty sector started to revive from slump.
