Not sure where we rank in terms of happiness index, all I know is that in our country anyway there is no electricity all though we want it and govt only promises it

well said.
I also liked Nitin's words: It is so simple to be happy but so difficult to be simple.
About why Ambanis fight or for that matter, why we should work our ass off is what Kishore Biyani calls: The Time Pass Theory (in his book It Happened in India)
We came to this world with nothing and we will leave one day with nothing. But we should strive to do interim, to have a good 'time pass'. Enjoy each day and draw happiness and joy from life's small little things and pleasures.
Whether you derive happiness in consuming (consumer) or creating products to be consumed (entrepreneur) or simply work for someone (employee) varies from person to person; varies with time and circumstances.
I am realizing that is what life is all about...

My philosophy is to create minimal needs in life so that one does not have any disappointments if one is short of anything. And if anything comes along, it always feels like a bonus and gives more joy.
There are some people who just won't be happy to go for vacations unless they go to five star resorts and such places. There are others who are happy even going for treks and living in tents. It all depends upon one's needs and wishes to be happy.

No electricity is apparently responsible for population explosion in rural India. When the farmers come home after a hard day's work to their wives, they have nothing else to do after the sun sets.
No wonder the Bhutanese are happy without electricity!
I tend to fully agree with your viewpoint about "perceived need". As long as you one does not project out a desire there is no issue. But if the hankering is for Toyota, and Mercedes comes along one is glad. But if the benchmark is Ferrari then Merc too will be disappointing.
Another point is, we as humans live for a very short time in the continuum of eternal time, and everybody is not at same level of evolution. If there was an instrument to see the mental / astral body we'd be laughing at others with how funny they are built, someone would have oversized hands or a tiny head. Since everybody is at a different stage of learning, a desire for an object can be very motivating for someone and debilitating for another person. Desire per se are not bad as long as they are making one a better person, but desires keep the motion of life moving.
Mind has to reach to a state to be contented otherwise desires themselves are not satiable. If you look at a bigger picture, sun itself can barely be seen from five galaxies away and there are over 100 billion of them and counting.... so let alone earth, which probably does not compare to size of a pollen grain floating is space. In this relative aspect, all wealth for forbes billionaires too is on that speck of pollen grain.

IMHO being content with what you have is an important key to happiness! having an aim to own something which you dont have today, does not mean you have to discontented! Comparisions and the way these comparisions affect you will determine how contented you feel with life! We all have happy people around us! first trait i notice in them is being content! comparision or discussions on neighbours car, house, wealth or for that matter anything, does not frustrate them. they feel happy when good things happen to other people and vice versa. Being consicious and awareness about this does improve one's own ability to achieve this state of mind! Watch good and happy characters from old hindi movies, you will understand what i am trying to say! Sorry, if i have confused the hell out of you guys! Am not so good at writing my thoughts ! but oral discussions are full of passion and clarity!

if everyone got into a state of contentment, world will stop..
nothing would be invented, no challenge would be taken and we would be still moving around with leaves around our private parts or maybe even nude.
Its because people wanted more, that the world is where it is today, no doubt , lot of misery has come out of this progress, but lots of good things have happened to.. for example medical science...
People died of flus and virals at one time and its because some people were not content with that that they spend their lives looking for cures.
If people were content, i would not matter if you wanted a rolls royce or an ambassodor... cars would not exist anyway.
Some crazies went on to invent nuclear bombs.. but at any stage, good and evil are co-existant anyway.
I rather be discontent than become a vegetable....
and all my respect to discontented people in history, who have created so many things that we take for granted today, including computers and internet , due to which this forum exists and we have an opportunity to even type our thoughts here.
Its all a scam, people telling people to get satisfied and then to pay their money to various institutions, which further gets deviated into fanatic activities.
(i would have to admit, that one out of every 10 institutions actually does good work too, so those are not included in my thesis here)
I for one, am totally against getting content and the day i am content is the day i would lose a reason to live.

Do you really believe that we are better off medically than what our ancestors were? Don't look at last couple of hundred years, thats when values degraded, and greed came in! Olden times a doc was paid money till you were well, the day you fell sick, he had to start paying you. because they believed that keeping the sickness away was docs job, not curing it! Get a good yoga teacher or a book and try it! you will understand what i am talking about!

Being content does not mean that one becomes a vegetable! One becomes a vegetable the day one stops growing.. i could focus my energies to grow in wealth, health, wisdom or the best, why not all three.. but in endeavor to grow, i don't have to be discontent.

Why does someone have to con you to do charity! you can choose to do charity anywhere and in any form.. i could do charity by working for a day to clean up my neighbourhood! charity is not money!! Another important aspect is never look at what you have given away! you decided earn good karma by doing charity, so then why chase the charity to find out what happened to it! Donating big money to big organisations is not charity, its a way to let the world know that i have arrived and i am good.. if ever i donate money, it would and should be a GUPTDAN!
I hope i am making myself understood! like i told you, am not good at expressing but okay with a discussion.. unless i get into a discussion the WHOLE point is very difficult to communicate.. Thanks sameer for discussing!
I understand your point about religious fanatics brainwashing gullible individuals in which case option of staying hungry and greedy look more appealing so as to avoid a rape atleast.
There is difference between contentment and fear of making no progress. All outward progress has been made out of curiosity. Even a snail on the wall is trying to 'know more than it already knows'. This is natural process of evolution in all life forms. Although snail cannot appreciate the painting, more than - 'is it good to eat'. In few centuries people will be making fun of us, only a handful of people went outside earth in 21st century. SO progress will continue. Just as 200 years back 99.9% people spent all their life within 50 kms radius of birthplace.
>if everyone got into a state of contentment, world will stop..
You are correct that world will not be needed. World is needed only as a training ground and pleasure place for our entertainment. Once we exhaust all desires we will lose the Will to live. As long as something attracts you or me in this world we are bound to stay here. Question to ask is : Are you enjoying all the roller coaster ride on earth ? If answer is yes, then you should continue to enjoy. I think I am speaking from standpoint of this question: "Who am I, Why am I here" which hindu scriptures term as Brahm Jigyasa.
I personally have not reached that state so as to be actively calm and calmly active, work for works sake. Desire for making it big in life and putting that money to good use are all expansive desires, desire for helping others, desires that expand our state of mind are good. If one is burning with greed, how can there be peace. If there is no peace, how can there be happiness.
I think we are mistakenly considering contentment and advancement of physical progress in world as mutually exclusive.
Money too has not a great deal to do with contentment. Money can give us freedom and opportunity to follow higher goals in life with spare time, but we may not choose to use that time for pursuing subtler aims.
So, one can either exhaust desires by actually experiencing them or through knowledge.
