Currently, there is a STT liability on cash and derivatives but there is no equivalent tax in commodities, nor is there any octroi or VAT paid because there is no delivery.

In 2008-09, the then finance minister, P Chidambaram had proposed a levy of CTT, but the commodity players then argued that the introduction of CTT will increase the burden on the already taxed agri commodities. On basis of these arguments, the commodity exchanges were successful to scuttle the entire CTT proposal.

I believe a commodity transaction tax (or CTT) should be levied on non agri commodities, most importantly the bullion market, to provide a level playing field. Currently, the STT liability on investors is very high for trading in equities and derivatives, but there is no STT or CTT liability for trading in non agri commodities. If this is not done, there could be major shift of trading volumes from equity exchange to commodity exchange.

In any economy, productive capital is raised through stock exchanges. Companies use the capital for infrastructure projects or to grow an enterprise in any sector, which leads to growth in the economy. The shift of volumes to commodities will have a serious impact on their ability to raise capital as well as a devastating impact on retail investors.

Trading in the equity market is not easy, but with the proper updates we can easily invest in the market and earn good profit.
