Topic: Organised Retailing Boom: Applying Pick Axe theme Posted: 12/Oct/2006 at 9:10pm |
Basant jee
You rightly mentioned about "liking for the pick axe industry when the public is busy digging for gold. Whether Reliance succeeds or Pantaloon is an answer we can only debate but irrespective of that Blue Star is a huge play ..........."
Some other sectors/companies to benefit directly/indirectly from the Organised Retailing boom would be:
- Central A/C, Refrigeration, Cold Rooms: Voltas, Blue Star
- Logistics, Supply Chain Mgmt: Gati, Gateway, Sical (?)
- Barcodes/printers/RFID tags: Bartronics, Gemini Comm
- Access Control: Zicom Security
- Car Park Mgmt: ???
- High-end construction material: Nitco Tiles (they have corporate tie up with leading retail players), Asahi (decorative glass/claddings)
I request forum members to post their views/comments.

Very relevant and some of these companies could give us a CAGR of 30%+ for the next 3-4 years quite easily. The trick is to look at the leader and not the second in the industry in each of these sectors.

Logistics players set to ride retail boom. An indication of the potential could be seen from the trend of increased private equity investments in logistics companies, points an industry analyst.
Players in other related sectors such as commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning, too, are exploring opportunities being thrown up by the estimated $412 billion investment, which is expected to flow into the Indian retail sector by 2011.

My own view: Pick Axe theme needs to played to exploit this golden opportunity.

We need to find out which are the companys that are going to be benefitted due to the retail boom and consumer spending.(Direct and Indirect benefits:
e.g 1. Bluestar- Airconditioning for the malls newly built.
2. Asahi India- Glass
3. Nitco Tiles - Tiles and home improvement
Can the boardmembers come with the ideas ?

See there could be several others but we need to concentrate on the areas which are sure shot for example logistics could be huge but then all retail companies could have their own logistics dept. but all of them would not manufacture theior own Ac's.

But Basant jee, even the trend in India seems to be outsourcing of non-core activities. So, some service providers also would grow, won't they?

yes but that would be because of general build up in economic activity but I am not sure if Reliance and Pantaloon would outsource their full logistics but if I compare it with AC then surely AC looks to be a better bet. I agree one company cannot ahve 100% of its functions in itself but then I was comparing on what was sureshot and what was kind of not so much also look at entry barriers where logistics has almost little entry barrier but the other product has as much as anything because I would not like to run my storte on an unbranded chinese make AC. That was the point.

Yeah, sure...critical areas or companies with niche will benefit much more than others.
There's a company called BL Kashyap, could anyone here throw more light on it? I heard that they are preferred service providers to malls in construction, as well as O&M.

I think we can also look at company like Bartronics which will fall under this theme. Bartronics has been discussed, though not in much detail, in earlier postings somewhere. Basically the company, though small, has doubled its sales/profitability for the last one year. THey are in the business of providing barcodes and other AIDC technologies including RFID.
