The Consumer Shopping basket

Key Observations:
  • There has been a remarkable decline in Savings & Investments among consumers.

  • While the overall spending on home appliances and consumer durables is up their spending as a percentage to income is on a declining trend.

  • The spending on vacation, home textile are almost the same.

  • Consumers have increased their relative spending on footwear, books & music, personal care items and eating out. Among which the emerging leader is movies & theatres.

  • The percentage of consumer’s spending is declining on groceries. This is due to the fact that groceries have an inelastic demand and any increase in disposable income of the consumer does not translate into a proportionate increase in the purchase of groceries.

  • The learning aspect is that the business like movies & theatres, books & music are going to expand and flourish more in the upcoming years.
